My version of Cake 101

This was the first weekend in a long time with no cakes to bake and decorate. I knew it would be a very busy week with the passing of Grandma Jane and wouldn't be able to give 100% so it was all for the best. With that said I decided instead of a picture, I wanted to write a few things....

For those who don't understand the time and dedication involved in cake decorating I will explain..... First comes the trip to the grocery store...don't forget that list again!... I'm sure people think, as I use to, flour, sugar what's the big deal? It goes beyond that believe me! Specific marshmallows are so very important and of course only specific stores carry them. Tons of food coloring (not regular kind!), wax paper, plastic wrap, cardboard bases (PITA to cut but what a waste of money to buy!), trays, ribbon, gumtex, edible glitters, etc. Now on to the actual baking... again PITA to cut all the liners to size (I try to pawn that off on the kids) hehe. Bake (cross your fingers it comes out perfect and don't have to re-do!), wait to cool, make all the fillings, run to the store for everything you forgot which is awesome when gas is almost $4/gallon, make the butter-cream, make all the fondant. To learn how to make fondant don't just you tube it..make it! UGH!! lol Color all the fondant, cut/torte cake, fill, crumb-coat, chill, now roll that fondant. What a work out! Wet and smooth crumb-coat, cover with fondant. Good Luck! Smooth and spend hours and hours decorating! That's my favorite part! Make a base, carefully deliver and breathe! If all goes well you have completed a cake in 2 days. Now when you hear cakes start at $50 and think wow that's expensive.. 2 days of work for $50 equals.... squat. Yes I said squat! It really does. Thankfully I love what I do and love the look on the faces of everyone who sees and eats my cakes! Someday my cakes will start at $100. Someday. ENJOY!
